Diamonds From The Rough Vol. 14

Thanks kindly folks, for all the nice comments regarding this recent stretch of the Deep Dish Delicacies series. It's been a pleasure putting them together so far and will continue to be for some time I suspect. However, before we become too "deeply" entrenched in 1960s soul, thought I might switch it up a bit. Enjoy.

Deep Dish Delicacies Vol. 61 {1961 Special}

Some deep soul enthusiasts feel the sub-genre came to fruition in early 1962 and was ushered in by Memphis stable, Stax Records. In February of that year a debut 45 from a young William Bell (You Don't Miss Your Water), entered the charts and reached the Hot 100 before summer. Though nowhere near a big success for any party involved, the song had a significant impact on black music and would become highly revered and widely influential. For the last several decades you would be hard pressed to find an "early deep or southern" soul compilation that doesn't feature this iconic cut. A case can certainly be made and I wouldn't ague it. However, despite taking several months to start making its mark, You Don't Miss Your Water was in fact released late November, 1961. As such, it can be found here, among many other equally emotive ballads.

This installment comes in three helpings, featuring tracks mined from both the Darling Dear and Deep Dish Delicacies anthologies. Additionally, a whopping 50 of the 78 tracks here, have not yet been featured in either series. All tracks re-sourced and/or remastered for this project. Enjoy.

Deep Dish Delicacies Vol. 59 {1959 Special}

When I first started the Deep Dish Delicacies series I seriously did not expect to see it exceed 50 volumes, however, I can't say as I hadn't at least entertained the notion. And long thought that if the series did reach 60+ volumes, I would make corresponding yearly installments.

Now while the precise origins of "deep soul" per say, is a matter of conjecture, it certainly wasn't 1959 as soul itself wasn't really recognized as a genre until early 1960. Soul like doo-wop, rock 'n' roll and a lot of 60s pop music, was born of rhythm and blues. And some of it clearly paved the way for the impassioned balladry we refer to as deep soul. This installment explores those avenues and could just as easily be a Darling Dear Special as the tracks are mined from former volumes of that series, plus I've included a handful of cuts not previously featured. All selections have been remastered, enjoy.

Deep Dish Delicacies Vol. 57 {New Recipes Special}

The next 'special' deep dish installment is another double dose of what qualifies as the deep soul of today. An integral element of the New Recipes series, alongside other styles of new soul, funk and rhythm n blues. Now, I'll be the first to admit that the majority of this music is a far cry from the traditional soul productions of yesteryear, however, there's some decent material here that shouldn't go unnoticed.

New Recipes has now run twenty volumes deep -- it features music recorded and released between late 2016 and late 2023 -- and has unexpectedly become an increasingly popular series. Here we have some more of the best so-called "deep" of it, showcasing new artists and classic soul icons alike. In effort to keep it fresh, each part below contains a few tracks that for one reason or another, never made the initial cut but were released within the same time frame. All selections have been remastered, enjoy.

Deep Dish Delicacies Vol. 55 {70s Southern Soul Special}

If you've followed this blog (and the former) since the beginning you will know that this wasn't my first anthology of compilations, however, it most certainly has become the GGG flagship series. With more than 50 volumes and very few repeated tracks among them, Deep Dish Delicacies deserves a little celebrating. Let this installment serve as the first in a long line of forthcoming "Special" editions.

For those few unfamiliar with this series, keep in mind the word 'deep' is used loosely here as I do not subscribe to the rigid definition as it pertains to soul music. While anguished paint-peeling vocals with a touch of twang, delivered at a snail's pace generally constitutes the bulk of the genre, I do not consider this specific criteria a prerequisite. I don't believe tempo, chord progressions or vocals of any sorts could or should dictate the emotive force of music. This is exemplified with a sax laden instrumental and a good handful of funky mid(nearing up)-tempo numbers below. Other than a collection of recordings from below the Mason/Dixon line, I wasn't looking to check any particular boxes here but from the early 70s swamp pop stylings of Leroy Soileau to the late 70s synthed-up sizzler from William Stuckey and the wide array of cuts between, we get a pretty good little glimpse of deep southern 70s groove. Enjoy.

Warheads, Brain Blasters & Sour Keys Vol. 02

Here's the second installment of this limited series ... a Glucose For Comfort special feature.

Warheads, Brain Blasters & Sour Keys is the other side of the canvas. A collection of cuts rife with all the haunting harmonies, string laden arrangements, gentle organ grinding and pleading horns essential (though, not limited) to the lowrider / sweet soul sound. However, the songs here paint an entirely different picture of love than the GFC series portrays. Frayed, betrayed, shattered, tattered, torn, scorned, forbidden, lost and unrequited love are all on the menu here. Simply put ... this is heartbreak soul.
