BLOG UPDATE // Glucose For Comfort Vol. 15

Got news ... a little from column A, more from column B, though it's all a matter of perspective I suppose.

On occasion I will continue to share installments from most of the Groovy Gumbo staple anthologies. Further additions of O-O-O-O-Oh Yeah!!! and the Songbook Series however, will no longer be featured here. I will also be moving away from weekly posts and closer to something resembling monthly.

I've decided to return my time and focus towards artist Discographies and REDUX work, by way of the original (and private) site. The fore mentioned specialty anthologies as well as my Goodie Grab Bags will be relegated to this private site. Also, I've got complete and 'nearly' complete works piling up and will soon be in a position to compose bio's again. Now, before any former members get too excited, all but a handful of you have recently had your access revoked. The few who remain have shared a lot of music with me over the years and continue to, as such, they will have access for as long as I keep at it. Going forward in the new year I am moving to a pseudo barter system. New and former members may be granted access on a limited (3-6 month) basis if willing and able to fill requests for various 45s/LPs/CDs. I don't have a definitive system in place nor even a well organized list of requests as of yet -- check below comp for starters -- but I'm working on it and know whichever way it shakes out, in terms of value, the scales will surely be tipped in your favor.

I know there's some Kent, Grapevine, Soulscape and other misc compilation CDs that I'm looking for in lossless formats. Those requests will require an EAC or log file of some sorts. With vinyl however, I'm far less concerned with format. Lossless is still preferred but quality of the source and the rip is paramount. All vinyl requests must be complete, audible, unimpeded, and 2-channel rips (stereo always preferred to mono, given the option). And absolutely no third-party recordings will be accepted. Over the coming holidays I'll be making some updates here, a revised application post, and will provide something to encompass scaling as it relates to specific requests.

For now, enjoy the long gestating latest installment of Glucose For Comfort. See you next year ...

=========================================================================

I plan to start posting roughly 2-4 times monthly on the private site, beginning in the new year.
{ie; 2 REDUXs, 1 New Discography, a Grab Bag and/or specialty compilation}

Here's some music that could open the doors for you ...

It's worth noting that I do have some of the sides listed below in varying degrees of quality but I'm hoping for fresh rips of these particular singles. Quite often if only one side is readily available it's either been remastered to death or compressed/distorted to death. YouTube can be a great source for rare soul but is littered with examples of what I'm talking about. Not to mention inaccuracies, DJ's promotional overdubs, and my personal pet peeve ... third-party recordings!

In The Rain

Today's featured songwriter is likely lesser known than our last subject, but those in the know, will surely recognize Tony Hester as one of the great hidden gems of Detroit's hey day. Though he never signed to the mighty label, Hester spent considerable time hanging out at the Hitsville studio during the mid 60s, watching Holland-Dozier-Holland produce records. Mowtown tried to sign Hester after his first recorded song, "A Little Bit Of Sympathy", by The Marvelettes gained traction in D-Town, but he refused. Most sources say Hester was only 14 then, but most of the same sources have his birthday as July 7, 1946 so there's some bad math somewhere there I suspect. More likely he was about 17/18. Golden World Records also wanted to sign Hester to contract but again Hester refused. Shortly after that, Ed Wingate, the owner of Golden World/Ric Tic Records, sold the companies to Motown. Detroit had groups galore and Hester sang with lots of them. He sang on a Holidays' recording but soon lost interest in groups because of the constant hassles. He then recorded a solo record, "Just Can't Leave You" b/w "Watch Your Step", issued on Karate Records in 1966. Following this Hester hooked up with Detroit's funk legend, Richard 'Popcorn' Wylie, with whom he co-wrote a wide breadth of material for a wide array of labels. Artists such as The Platters, Steve Mancha, Jimmy Delphs, Jimmy 'Soul' Clark, Mary Wells, Bettye LaVette, Deon Jackson and many others benefited from this collaboration. Hester's real big break came via producer, Don Davis in 1970, when he paired Hester with The Dramatics, recording for Stax subsidiary, Volt Records. Hester penned the entirety of their first two albums, recorded for the label in 1971 and 1973 respectively. They were the first to cut Hester's "In The Rain", which remains to be one of the most popular, enduring, and recorded R&B tunes of all time. Hester continued to contribute to further albums by The Dramatics, as well as writing material for The Dells, Jeanie Reynolds, Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr, among others. However, Hester had developed quite a serious drug addiction by the mid 70s and was working less and less as the decade came to a close. Tragically, in the summer of 1980, he was found shot to death in a drug related robbery on the streets of Detroit. Fortunately, his music live's on to this day and Hester is remembered fondly by those who were close to him.

The Lover Man

Here's another installment for the Songbook Series ... a deep dip with the mercurial, magical and immensely talented Jerry Williams Jr. (aka Swamp Dogg). In addition to an accomplished recording career of his own -- and still currently at it -- Williams is a phenomenal songwriter, producer and arranger with an incredibly impressive list of titles to his credit. This is exemplified especially by his work with several southern soul singers from the late 60s through to the late 70s, with much of it made available via ACE/Kent Records and similar outfits. This two part collection of various artists will surely feature some crossover with these releases but also traverses some uncharted territory, plus I've included a third volume of entirely 'Dogg does Dogg' recordings. A few years back, with a fairly thorough account, I featured Williams/Swamp Dogg on the main site with a bio curated primarily from Wiki and the ramblings of the mighty Sir Shambling in the 9th and 10th parts of his feature on Quinvy Studios. I'll let the newcomers suss it out themselves if not already familiar with this satirical, sensual, political and occasionally polarizing tour de force of an artist. Here, as always with the Songbook Series, we focus on material written by Williams but make no mistake ... he's also the producer and/or arranger on many of the recordings featured here and plays piano on more than three dozen of the included titles. Enjoy!

I'll be back at it next weekend with a new edition of Deep Dish Delicacies. In the meantime, perhaps someone out there can fill a special request for me? Looking for the compilation linked below. FLAC, WAV or AIFF is certainly preferred but I would be grateful for anything audible. Thanks, here's hoping.

(In An Early 90s) New York State Of Mind

Today we take a rare and largely unappreciated excursion into some old school hip hop and boom bap, purists look away now! For the few still interested, this one's fairly self-explanatory ... a small selection of jeep beats and boom-box ballads that echoed through the burroughs of the big apple, during the early 90s. A bygone era and brief window where New York felt rejuvenated ~ employment was on the rise, streets were relatively safe, and art and culture was widely celebrated throughout the city. The success of hip hop in mainstream markets played a significant part in this of course, though it was also success that drastically altered the landscape of hip hop and rap culture come the mid to late 90s. In a few short years (starting with what I call the 'bling' era) hip hop went from being a vehicle for culture, expression and awareness, to being a cookie-cutter operation built on image orientation, earnings potential and exploitation. It's been a billion dollar industry for decades now and has wreaked of inauthenticity just as long. This collection takes us back to a time before all that; fully formed as a craft though still fresh enough to be an outlet for innovation. This is hip hop and boom bap from a time when its pillars educated, empowered and inspired people ... a time when the brothers on the streets were willing to work it out.

As Deep Dish Delicacies, my first and longest running thematic series reaches its 50th installment, I thought I would round it up with the finest deep soul offerings of the O-O-O-O-Oh Yeah!!! series. New Recipes Volume 17

For those requesting access to the private site ... please stop.
I haven't posted anything there in a couple months, I don't plan to anytime soon, and all links are dead since zippyshare has gone kaput! I have no intention of re-upping anything and do not have the time required to continue in the fashion that I have established there. I made a commitment to weekly compilations here on the public site and plan to stick with it. Dig it or don't, but that's it for the foreseeable future. Many thanks to the select few who have contributed over the last several years.

Make Up For Lost Time

With a career in music now spanning sixty years, it should come as no surprise that the talented Bobby Patterson has worked a wide variety of roles within the industry. Hailing from Dallas, Texas, this multi-instrumentalist has served as bandleader, singer, songwriter and producer. Patterson has worked in A&R and promotions, as well as owning and operating his own label. In later years he became popular radio personality by way of Dallas-based radio station, KKDA 730 AM. Patterson signed with Abnak Records in the mid 60s where he recorded quite prolifically with his band, The Mustangs, through the remainder of the decade. The lion's share of his material was self-penned / produced with 45s issued exclusively on subsidiary label, Jetstar Records which sadly folded along with parent label, Abnak Records, in 1970. It was just prior to this that Patterson had met Jerry Strickland (who is co-credited here quite a bit), a Louisiana-based songwriter who at the time was running Jewel subsidiary, Soul Power Records. These two chaps paired better than chitlins and collard greens, churning out a swath of southern soul compositions, primarily for a host of Jewel Records artists on the Ronn, Paula and Soul Power imprints during the early 70s. Patterson helmed production on many of these projects including full-length albums by Little Johnny Taylor and Tommie Young, as well as his own debut album, It's Just A Matter Of Time, released on Paula Records in 1972. Sadly the partnership fizzled out fairly quickly and by the mid 70s Strickland was operating Alarm Records while Patterson was launching his own label, Proud Records in 1976. The following year he released a 45 by way of Sylvia Robinson's All Platinum Records and wouldn't return until 1982 when he released The Storyteller album, as by Bobby Story. After a fourteen year recording hiatus Patterson's resurgence came with appropriately titled album, Second Coming, released on his own Proud Records in 1996. This was followed by festivals, a tour of Northern England (where he is treated like Royalty), the annual vintage R&B/Rock showcase at Ponderosa Stomp and another album, I'd Rather Eat Soup, released on Big Bidness Records in 1998. The albums Live At The Longhorn Ballroom (2003) and Back Out Here Again (2012) were issued on Proud while the critically acclaimed I Got More Soul! (2014), was released by Los Angeles-based Omnivore Recordings. Since then Patterson has entertained a many of live audiences across the US and internationally, performing just earlier this month at the Longhorn R & B Revue in Dallas, Texas. Most of the recordings included in this collection come from the peak of Patterson's career in the early 70s and are produced by the man himself. Enjoy.
