I am regularly working on projects for friends, clients and myself that may not directly relate to Groovy Gumbo but are on the other hand, amenable at the very least. Perhaps I will share some of these wares here in hopes they will find appreciative ears. However, unlike my mainstay anthologies, I will not be focused on maintaining any links, nor providing re-ups for anything in this section. Get it. Got it. Good.

BT-LO

Unlike many of his cohorts and colleagues, Buddy Terry's time in the limelight was quite brief, releasing five albums in as many years. In the late 60s he recorded two lovely soul-jazz albums for Prestige, then in the early 70s three for Bob Shad's Mainstream label, all considerably more funky and explorative than his Prestige albums. A few years later the previously unreleased cut, 'Miscegenation', surfaced on a Mainstream compilation LP, but no further recordings. He was a long-time member of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers but his solo material was on a whole other level in my opinion. For the unacquainted ... while this is a stretch even from my Metamorphic Malfunktions series, I think you can find enough similarity here to appreciate the groove. It kicks off with a real Stax-styled number followed by Aretha's classic -- that remains pretty faithful -- channeling that "Alabama by way of Atlantic" groove. From there the funky floodgates open and I encourage you to let yourself get swept up in its flow. For those familiar with Buddy Terry, you may notice that of the handful of tracks he's more recognized for, most are absent. The Mainstream albums have been remastered and re-issued a few times over but not the case with his Prestige material. I think Ive done a pretty good job cleaning up those tracks to give the collection more continuity. Anywho, dig it or don't.
