Howdy! How'do?

Welcome one and all to my new site ... the original site is now a private affair, accessible by invite only. More about that later though. This new 'public' site will be focused purely on compilation anthologies. Much like the Pages feature on the old site, I have created quick-access archives for each featured series in the back pages, I've posted the more recent volumes in traditional fashion and have included brand new installments to both the Metamorphic Malfunktions and Darling Dear anthologies. More of each anthology is on the way, plus several new projects are in the works.

Currently all links are hosted by Pixeldrain, though I do plan to replace and/or pair with Zippyshare links. The layout is slimmer and will likely stay that way ... scroll down, snoop around and check it out!

APPLY FOR FULL ACCESS TO GROOVY GUMBO HERE

The original Groovy Gumbo site has gone private folks!

I will no longer be making artists' discographies, retrospectives or REDUX'd collections available to the public. Everyone is welcome here at "Gusto's Groovy Gumbo PRESENTS", where I will continue to provide access to previously posted compilations and feature further installments publicly.

Moving forward, very few of you will be granted full access to the original site. For Full Access ....

                    READ CAREFULLY AND COMMENT BELOW

If you wish to be part of our 'Private Sector' with access to the full artist features, REDUX'd efforts, the Sizzlin' Slabs and Goodie Grab Bags anthologies, extensive archives, etc. there are several requirements.

BLOGGER requires that you provide a gmail account. ***
I however, require something more serious ... I require trust and assurance!

You can earn this trust by telling me a little bit about yourself ....
who are you? what do you do? why do you feel you should be a part of this community?
You can provide some assurance with a pledge ....
promise to keep contents private and be willing to contribute material and/or time to the site.

I'm not looking for deeply personal details, credit card numbers or the name of your first pet. I'm not looking for adoration either, just some honesty and genuine interest. A good reference can go a long way as well, obviously. Regardless of what you share, it will remain between us and not be published.

There are nearly 90 vacancies but I am in no rush to open the gates. Be thorough with your request and patient awaiting response, I will be considering each applicant carefully and in my own time. Finally, if Zippyshare is a problem for you, please don't apply. Hopefully, I will see you on the other side.

Diamonds From The Rough Vol. 01

NEW SERIES ALERT!!!
this one's been on the backburner for some time and could very well find an audience here. I have certainly voiced my disdain for disco music here on many occasions. And to be clear, the  disdain stems from a deeper seed than just the candy-assed synthesized sound of the music itself. It comes from the domineering factor it had on the music industry as a whole. The demand for disco by the mid to late 70s was so great, that it simply no longer left room for real soul and funk music to sell. Even the top billing/selling acts were dropping disco albums simply to stay afloat -- many containing maybe one or two real soul songs, or not even. By the time disco finally withered on the vine in the early 80s, nearly a decade had passed. R&B had become electric blues and soul/funk became electro-boogie. The glory days were gone and mountains upon mountains of (mostly terrible or sub-par) wax was left in its wake. Well folks, I've been mining away, polishing what few rare gems I can glean from the shitpiles of records released during this dark, dark time in music history. Culled entirely from recordings within the 1975-85 window, Diamonds From The Rough features real soul music, played by real musicians, with actual instruments. Enjoy.

BARKIVES: Glucose For Comfort

this anthology explores the expansive realms of "sweet soul". while a portion of these tracks could just as easily appear on a Deep Dish volume and a good portion more are certainly akin to the works found in the Darling Dear series, Glucose For Comfort is a different monster all together. a gradient blend of northern, southern and west coast soul as per usual but these cuts get mighty sappy, and for the most part reflect positive aspects of love and relationships. in terms of musical content, expect to hear more 70s group soul, more falsetto, more uptempo numbers, and a whole lot more string-based arrangements. enjoy.

BARKIVES: Metamorphic Malfunktions

the long overdue Metamorphic Malfunktions anthology marks uncharted territory ~ it's my first affair with the funk and I've flirted with with a wide array here. most major American regions are represented here with an eclectic blend of funk. ranging from deep and dirty to light and lifting, with splashes of jazz funk, blaxploitation, proto disco and afro-beat. enjoy!

BARKIVES: Darling Dear

this series serves as a precursory companion to the Deep Dish Delicacies series -- essentially it explores the deeper side of doo-wop and rhythm n blues cut in the days before they really called it soul. Containing material recorded between 1953 and 1963 with a primary focus in the 1957-61 range; during it's most expressive and explosive term. Darling Dear is simply more impassioned balladry for the most part. enjoy.

BARKIVES: O-O-O-O-Oh Yeah!!!

this is a fun one. the five O's are a slightly abbreviated acronym for "One n' Only's, One-Offs & Oddities" and this series is just that! a collection of material released on 45s that either represent the artists' lone release or is a one-off collaboration/side project, and/or 45s from more established musicians, mis-credited or credited to a pseudonym. furthermore, this is not just single sides, every volume will contain a bakers dozen of  both A's and B's. of course this means that not everything is necessarily a winner, and file quality ranges quite a bit. that said, I picked the cuts here based on the strength of the material and many are double sided doozies for sure. as per usual, I lean a little heavy towards the deep stuff, however, this series returns to a more original Groovy Gumbo format and features a bit of everything. enjoy.

BARKIVES: Deep Dish Delicacies

simply put, this could be called a deep soul collection but purists beware, I do use the term somewhat loosely. while the majority will easily fall into that category, this series includes a wide array of soulful offerings. all the heavyweights are here, along side the obscure, elusive, near-lost and unheralded. with songs that blur the lines between deep and sweet soul. songs of heartache, heartbreak, love lost, love found, love unrequited, love rejoiced, the need for leaving and the longing for return. cathartic songs that speak to us all on a very primal level. what you won't find in this anthology is funk, disco or generally up-tempo soul. very few of these tracks even make the mid-tempo mark. maybe this collection might be best described as "deeply impassioned soul balladry". enjoy.

BARKIVES: Gusto's Groovy Gumbo

this is the original series that started it all. while sound quality isn't really a focus with this collection, its charm is conveyed by its variety. northern soul, southern soul, doo-wop, funk, deep soul, sweet soul, modern soul, classic rhythm n blues, and much more grace this hodge-podged anthology. enjoy.
