GGG Presents Deep Dish Delicacies Vol. 70 {1970 Special}

Well it's been a longer time coming than expected but the wait is over. The Deep Dish Delicacies yearly specials step into the 70s and I'm especially excited for this leg of the journey. Each of these specials have been peppered with previously "un-comped" cuts but I suspect we'll see a significant uptick in those numbers as we traverse this next decade. As it should be, this particular volume showcases some of the precious gems being mined down in Muscle Shoals, during one of its more prolific periods. All of these specials are steeped in southern soul to be sure, but I will say, this one makes a pretty strong case for Chicago soul as well. Though compiled from earlier editions of Deep Dish Delicacies, this is not a simple drag and drop collection. All tracks have been re-sourced and/or remastered for this project. Additionally, close to 3/4's of the tracks here have not yet been featured in the series. Dig it ... or don't.

Too much of any good thing can still bring about a bellyache, let alone a haphazard combo like Frankfurters, Footlongs & Fruit Roll-Ups. This'll be the last one for a lil' while, I swear. This fourth volume features two pairs intended for Deep Dish Delicacies and Diamonds From The Rough, one omitted from (and a recently released lost gem surely destined to be on) Glucose For Comfort. Frankfurters, Footlongs & Fruit Roll-Ups Vol. 01

***NEW ANTHOLOGY***
Over the past decade I've developed quite the specific and methodical processes for putting compilations together. Some apparent, others not so much. I'll spare most of the details but something every one of them has in common, is that I collect more songs than I can cram on to each. Songs are cut... every damn time! Track count and time constraints often dictates that the longer songs get axed first. Several years ago when I was churning out considerably more than I do these days, I decided to start setting these lengthy discarded tracks aside. The majority of my mainstay anthologies are genre and/or era specific ~ this new "long-gestating" project is not. The theme is simply long songs (6min+) and it will siphon from this growing pool, featuring material originally intended for any number of anthologies, including some unpublished and still in the works. Now that said, while this one will offer a more eclectic sound don't go expecting spiritual jazz meanderers, disco plod-a-longs or extended DJ remixes, I'm still all about the ballads for the most part. I'm also about alliteration, general word play and food. So, Frankfurters, Footlongs & Fruit Roll-Ups hits all the targets. 

 

This inaugural edition gathers cuts initially destined for Deep Dish Delicacies, Diamonds From The Rough, Glucose For Comfort, Warheads, Brain Blasters & Sour Keys, Metamorphic Malfunktions, as well as an unpublished/incomplete Southern Soul anthology and a Gospel project I put together for a friend last year. Here's the next jam-pact deep soul potpourri ... like the former it's a whopping 10 parts, with over 150 tracks not yet featured in the Deep Dish Delicacies series. Fun Fact: this is not the first time in the series I've exclusively dedicated a volume to1968. DDD#44 was also a love letter to the year, with a number of those cuts reappearing here. I think it's worth noting that while I do believe there's something here for every fan of 60's soul music -- even with a sprawling affair such as this -- it's impossible to fully encompass or convey the significance and impact of this music at that particular point in time. Uhh Ohh (Selections From The Songbook Of Simtec Simmons)

Walter "Simtec" Simmons might not quite qualify as an enigmatic figure in soul music, however, there certainly isn't a wealth of information readily available out there. A number of his recordings have recently been remastered and reissued which prompted me to revisit and and complete his discography collection to my liking. In re-acquainting myself I was reminded that our man wasn't simply one half of a one-hit duo, dubbed the psychedelic Sam & Dave. Simmons was a singer, songwriter, producer, arranger and one hell of a piano player who worked consistently in these capacities for at least a couple decades. His handy work extends far beyond his writing credits in this songbook collection. The T-Box Band aka The T-Box's and its members are also featured -- both credited and uncredited -- throughout this compilation. They initially started as The Wheels in early 60's Chicago. Simtec Simmons along with his brother Ronald Simmons and Bobby Pointer, under the tutelage of Ulysses Samuel Warren, came together as the backing band for Wylie Dixon. They would later backline the entirety of Simtec's Maurci recordings, then go on to become Simtec & Wylie's backing band and a house band for other projects produced by the duo (Krystal Generation, Tender Touch, Etc). Following that, core members, Ronald Simmons and Bobby Pointer -- who also played on Gene Chandler and Jerry Butler's duet album -- became a part of Southside Movement. Later in the 70's Walter "Simtec" Simmons recorded his lone solo album, once again joined by his brother Ronald Simmons, Bobby Pointer and Southside Movement's Willie "The Touch" Hayes. Enjoy!

On The Real Side (Selections From The Songbook Of Tommy Tate)

A month or few ago, for a friend of a friend, I put together a discography collection of Tommy Tate. Admittedly, though I had the near entirety of his recordings, I was not all that familiar with the man's work. I knew of his brief stretch at Stax with The Nightingales, his stellar mid-70s southern soul cuts for KoKo Records, and that he was highly regarded among deep soul aficionados as a songwriter ~ specifically for the cream of Malaco's crop. In amassing Tate's discography, it quickly became clear that a songbook was in order to further familiarize and educate myself. As luck would have it, lots of great singers have tackled Tate's efforts with both vigor and valor. That's at the forefront of this collection which features soul superstars alongside some fantastic unheralded singers, spans five decades, and showcases Tate's journeyman prowess with a breadth of styles from deep soul and southern fried funk to electric blues and disco, plus it's peppered with a few pop oriented numbers and a touch of gospel soul. I hope you enjoy it as I do.
