Here's the next jam-pact deep soul potpourri ... like the former it's a whopping 10 parts, with over 150 tracks not yet featured in the Deep Dish Delicacies series. Fun Fact: this is not the first time in the series I've exclusively dedicated a volume to1968. DDD#44 was also a love letter to the year, with a number of those cuts reappearing here. I think it's worth noting that while I do believe there's something here for every fan of 60's soul music -- even with a sprawling affair such as this -- it's impossible to fully encompass or convey the significance and impact of this music at that particular point in time. However, we can keep it spinning.

Uhh Ohh (Selections From The Songbook Of Simtec Simmons)

Walter "Simtec" Simmons might not quite qualify as an enigmatic figure in soul music, however, there certainly isn't a wealth of information readily available out there. A number of his recordings have recently been remastered and reissued which prompted me to revisit and and complete his discography collection to my liking. In re-acquainting myself I was reminded that our man wasn't simply one half of a one-hit duo, dubbed the psychedelic Sam & Dave. Simmons was a singer, songwriter, producer, arranger and one hell of a piano player who worked consistently in these capacities for at least a couple decades. His handy work extends far beyond his writing credits in this songbook collection. The T-Box Band aka The T-Box's and its members are also featured -- both credited and uncredited -- throughout this compilation. They initially started as The Wheels in early 60's Chicago. Simtec Simmons along with his brother Ronald Simmons and Bobby Pointer, under the tutelage of Ulysses Samuel Warren, came together as the backing band for Wylie Dixon. They would later backline the entirety of Simtec's Maurci recordings, then go on to become Simtec & Wylie's backing band and a house band for other projects produced by the duo (Krystal Generation, Tender Touch, Etc). Following that, core members, Ronald Simmons and Bobby Pointer -- who also played on Gene Chandler and Jerry Butler's duet album -- became a part of Southside Movement. Later in the 70's Walter "Simtec" Simmons recorded his lone solo album, once again joined by his brother Ronald Simmons, Bobby Pointer and Southside Movement's Willie "The Touch" Hayes. Enjoy!

On The Real Side (Selections From The Songbook Of Tommy Tate)

A month or few ago, for a friend of a friend, I put together a discography collection of Tommy Tate. Admittedly, though I had the near entirety of his recordings, I was not all that familiar with the man's work. I knew of his brief stretch at Stax with The Nightingales, his stellar mid-70s southern soul cuts for KoKo Records, and that he was highly regarded among deep soul aficionados as a songwriter ~ specifically for the cream of Malaco's crop. In amassing Tate's discography, it quickly became clear that a songbook was in order to further familiarize and educate myself. As luck would have it, lots of great singers have tackled Tate's efforts with both vigor and valor. That's at the forefront of this collection which features soul superstars alongside some fantastic unheralded singers, spans five decades, and showcases Tate's journeyman prowess with a breadth of styles from deep soul and southern fried funk to electric blues and disco, plus it's peppered with a few pop oriented numbers and a touch of gospel soul. As we step into the latter end of the 60s (my favorite time in soul music), it should come as no surprise that this collection keeps growing larger. That said, I am drawing a line in the sand here! Ten parts is my maximum and more than enough for any deep soul fiend. It's a sprawling affair featuring a wide array, so take it in stride my friends. Though mined from earlier editions of Deep Dish Delicacies, this is not a simple drag and drop collection. All tracks have been re-sourced and/or remastered for this project.
