Been So Long

Here's another songbook collection spawn from a recently REDUX'd project ...

Well before he was at the helm of Hi Records for its most successful stretch, trumpeter / bandleader / producer, Willie Mitchell had a secret weapon in his arsenal. It was in 1957 when he first crossed paths with Memphis-born Don Bryant and his group, The Quails. A twist of fate quickly had them re-named The Four Kings and backing Mitchell, with Bryant as lead vocalist. For several years the group worked closely with Mitchell, where Bryant would hone his talents as both singer and songwriter. Mitchell had Bryant write "I Got To Know" in 1960, for his sessions with The 5 Royales, forging a relationship that would continue as such for close to two decades. Even as the The Four Kings withered moving into the mid-60s, Bryant remained with Mitchell, and as a soloist released about ten 45s and a full length album for Hi Records between 1965 and 1969. With over 150 titles to his credit, Bryant of course penned a large portion his own output while composing material for other acts on the label. His songs were also cut by other artists associated with Mitchell. Danny White, Buddy Lamp, Lee Rogers, Tony Ashley and Solomon Burke, among others, all benefited from Bryant's abilities. By the early 70s Willie Mitchell was a co-owner and essentially running Hi Records, with Bryant strictly contracted as a songwriter for the company. Often paired with rising star Ann Peebles, Bryant penned "Trouble Heartaches And Sadness", "99 Pounds", "I’ve Been There Before", "Do I Need You", "Until You Came Into My Life", "A Love Vibration", "I Needed Somebody", and many many more with Peebles in mind and often co-writing. Their chemistry quickly became intimacy and following the success of "Can't Stand The Rain", the couple were married in 1974. Bryant spent much of the subsequent decade writing and opening for Peebles and in some capacity, would appear on her records. Bryant would perform at his church and released a few gospel records between 1987 and 2000. In 2016 Bryant collaborated with Memphis-based group, The Bo-Keys, which led to not one, but two of the best soul records of recent years. Don't Give Up On Love (2017) and You Make Me Feel (2020) are a triumphant return to Bryant's roots, featuring new and original material alongside some classics from his songbook, and finding our man in truly incredible form. This project mainly focuses on mid 60s to mid 70s recordings and features very little performed by either Don Bryant or Ann Peebles. Additionally due to my personal preference for southern groovers and deep ballads, this collection is fairly lopsided, neglecting a number Bryant's more up-beat northern knockers. Regardless, hope you dig it!

Sweet Thing

In the private sector, since early autumn, I have been primarily focused on REDUX'd collections ... improving quality, format (when possible) and presentation. And when it applies, the addition of an accompanying songbook collection. Just last week, I finally got around to the incredible George Jackson, who was arguably one of the greatest soul songwriters of all time. I could have easily crafted a four or five part songbook anthology, but kept it to a tight and delightful two-part collection, enjoy.

If there is in fact magic down in Muscle Shoals, then George Jackson was easily one of its greatest practitioners. His pen was his wand and with it, he wielded a mighty power. Through his two stays in the rural Alabama-based hit making haven, Jackson penned well over a thousand songs, a number of which became hit records for a wide array of popular artists. First at Rick Hall's FAME studio in the late 60s to early 70s and then again in the late 70s to early 80s, at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios, founded by a handful of former FAME musicians. Prior to this and in between these stints, Jackson spent considerable time in the musically rich city of Memphis, TN. There he was briefly under contract with Quinton Claunch and Doc Russell's Goldwax label between 1966 and 1967 and Sounds Of Memphis studios from 1973 to 1975, where at both of which, he worked closely with the talented Dan Greer. Additionally, he was constantly on Willie Mitchell's radar and subsequently had a few recording and writing endeavors by way of Mitchell's Memphis-based Hi Records. Jackson had a couple minor R&B hits, yet ultimately it was his ability to craft provocative works that could be easily interpreted and reinterpreted, that earned him some modest success and recognition. Jackson spent nearly two decades with Malaco Records exclusively as a songwriter during the company's most prominent period, penning material for some of the best in the business. In his near 40 yearlong career, Jackson was behind such hits as Wilson Pickett's "A Man And A Half", Clarence Carter's "Messin' With My Mind", Candi Staton's "Evidence", Otis Clay's "The Only Way Is Up", Bob Seger's "Old Time Rock n Roll", ZZ Hill's "Down Home Blues", Little Milton's "Struggling Lady" and many many more. At this point you've all likely come to realize that I rarely rely on the so-called hits and as such, none of these versions are included here. Furthermore, I certainly wasn't going to let The Osmonds' #1 hit, "One Bad Apple", spoil the bunch. Hope you dig what I've dug up for this ...

New Recipes Volume 15

In traditional Groovy Gumbo fashion, after a short break I'm back with a fresh batch of New Recipes featuring some fine releases from the past year. As stated several times in 2022 ... if nothing else, it was a fantastic year for new music. Here's a jam pact collection proving as such. Not one but two heaping helpings, plus a third consisting entirely of instrumentals -- chew with your mouth closed, please!

NOTES:
all tracks released in 2022 with the exception of "Darling Mine" from Wee Willie Walker's (R.I.P.) final recording, released in 2021. Though close to two years old now, I just recently heard about the album and Walker's passing so it's both new and relevant to me.

if so inclined, Parts 1 and 3 can fit on 80 min CD-R. however, Part 2 would require omitting ** track 12 or at least two other tracks of equal or greater length.

Foolish Hearts Break Fast

Although never having one of his own recordings issued by the label, Stax Records was where Homer Banks had his greatest success. And nearly twenty years since his passing, he still remains to be one of the company's best kept secrets, despite that many of the songs he wrote for the label's artists in the 60s an 70s, have since become contemporary classics. Banks was a masterful songsmith -- a craftsman at contextualizing the subtleties and nuances of romance; forbidden or otherwise -- often referred to as 'a pioneer of the cheating song'. Not sure I would agree with that, but there's no doubt, he was one of the first to bring such subject matter to the forefront of popular rhythm n blues music. At Stax, Banks first worked closely with Allen A. Jones then went on to form the famed songwriting/production team, We Three Inc. with Bettye Crutcher and Raymond Jackson. Before the label's collapse in the mid 70s, Banks was working almost exclusively with Carl Hampton, whose partnership endured beyond Stax Records. They wrote and produced for many artists and even released an album together in 1977. Towards the end of the decade and through most of the 80s Banks was partnered with Chuck Brooks with whom he wrote, produced and released music by way of their Soundtown Records imprint. Banks was one of the great ones and I could go on but I think I'll let this whopping 3-part Songbook Collection speak for itself!
