Deep Dish Delicacies Vol. 55 {70s Southern Soul Special}

If you've followed this blog (and the former) since the beginning you will know that this wasn't my first anthology of compilations, however, it most certainly has become the GGG flagship series. With more than 50 volumes and very few repeated tracks among them, Deep Dish Delicacies deserves a little celebrating. Let this installment serve as the first in a long line of forthcoming "Special" editions.

For those few unfamiliar with this series, keep in mind the word 'deep' is used loosely here as I do not subscribe to the rigid definition as it pertains to soul music. While anguished paint-peeling vocals with a touch of twang, delivered at a snail's pace generally constitutes the bulk of the genre, I do not consider this specific criteria a prerequisite. I don't believe tempo, chord progressions or vocals of any sorts could or should dictate the emotive force of music. This is exemplified with a sax laden instrumental and a good handful of funky mid(nearing up)-tempo numbers below. Other than a collection of recordings from below the Mason/Dixon line, I wasn't looking to check any particular boxes here but from the early 70s swamp pop stylings of Leroy Soileau to the late 70s synthed-up sizzler from William Stuckey and the wide array of cuts between, we get a pretty good little glimpse of deep southern 70s groove. Enjoy.
